"To Kill a Mockingbird" takes place in an small, old southern town. In this town, they eat a lot of homemade food and they get most of their ingredients off the land. On this page, I will share a few recipes that will make you and your family feel like you are eating with one of the fine families from Maycomb County!
Do you want to make amazing cakes just like Miss Maudie? Try this amazing delicious lemon cake recipe!
What you need:
- 1 cup of butter
- 2 1/2 cups of flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of lemon zest
- 2 cups of sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/4 cup of lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 1 cup of buttermilk
- Frosting
- 1 lemon for garnish
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 350. Grease and flour two 8 inch cake pans. Don't forget to tap out the extra flour!
2. In a medium sized bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and lemon zest.
3. In a large bowl, beat butter and 1 1/2 cups of sugar until it is light and fluffy. Then beat in the eggs and egg yolks one at a time. Beat in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.
4. Alternately beat in flour mixture and buttermilk (beginning and ending with the flour mixture) into the sugar and butter mix. Mix until it is combined.
5. Divide the batter between your two pans. Bake for about 32-35 minutes. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes then remove cakes onto a wire rack.
6. While waiting for your cake to bake and cool, bring 1/2 of sugar and 1/2 cup of water to boil in a saucepan. Add the lemon slices into it and simmer for 25 minutes. Then remove the lemon slices onto a wax paper and add 1/4 cup of lemon juice into the water and sugar mixture.
7. Using a toothpick, poke holes in the cake and brush on the lemon syrup. let it cool completely, then add the frosting. Add the candied lemon slices as a garnish on top of the cake.
Southern Fried Chicken!
You don't have to be exactly like the Finch's and eat this for breakfast, but it makes a good dinner! Try this Southern Fried Chicken Recipe! Just follow these simple steps:
What you need:
- 1 whole chicken, cut into 6 pieces
- 2 eggs
- 1 can (12 ounces) of evaporated milk
- 2 teaspoons of salt
- 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons of onion powder
- 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups of vegetable oil for frying

4. To check if your oil is hot enough, sprinkle some flour into it. If the flour fries, then you are ready to cook your chicken. Place the chicken pieces in the skillet. Fry one side for 5 minutes then turn the chicken over. Let the chicken fry for 15 minutes (or until meat is cooked through and the juices run clear).
Southern Sweet Iced Tea
If you need to nice refreshing drink to cool down after being out in the hot Maycomb sun, Coca Cola won't always do the trick, so try this sweet tea!
What You Need:
- 1 pinch of baking soda
- 6 orange pekoe tea bags
- 3/4 cup of white sugar
- 2 cups of boiling water
- 6 cups of cool water
- Lemon slices

1. Sprinkle a pinch of baking soda into a 64-ounce glass pitcher. Pour in the boiling water and add the tea bags. Cover and let it steep (about 15 minutes or until desired strength).
2. Remove the tea bags and stir in the sugar until it is dissolved. Poor in the cool water and refrigerate until cold.
3. Pour over ice and garnish with a lemon slice.

- 1 teaspoon of baking Soda
- 2 teaspoons of baking Powder
- 1/2 cup of sour milk (milk and a bit of vinegar)
- 3 mashed bananas
- Nuts or chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease bread pans.
2. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking soda, and baking powder) in a medium sized bowl. In a separate larger bowl, mix the butter, eggs, and sour milk together.
3. Slowly add the dry ingredients into the egg mix,
4. Mash up the bananas and mix into the batter. Add chocolate chips and/or nuts if desired.
5. Pour batter into bread pans and bake for 30-40 minutes.
