Original Synopsis

The book To Kill a Mocking Bird begins with the characters Jem and Scout Finch talking about a traumatic experience in their life that ended up with Jem breaking his arm. Next we meet a character named Dill and how he comes to visit Maycomb every summer.  During the summer Dill learns more about Maycomb and a person named Boo Radley catches his attention. Boo Radley is a man who townspeople say lost his mind, and hasn’t left his house ever since.

Throughout the summer Jem, Scout, and Dill try and lure Boo Radley out of his house to see what he looks like. After summer is over Dill leaves; then Jem and Scout go back to school. After school one day Scout found a pack of gum in the tree in front of Boo’s house.  Scout and Jem continued to find items in the tree, until Boo’s brother came to Maycomb and filled in the hole.

During the winter that same year Miss Maudie’s house gets burned to the ground and in the commotion Boo leaves his house and puts a blanket on Scout.  Not long after Jem and Scout’s aunt Alexandra comes to live with them. Their Dad, Atticus who is a renowned lawyer in town is asked to defend Tom Robinson (a black man) in court because he is accused of raping a white girl. During the time between when Tom  is charged and convicted Atticus has received multiple threats. Scout and Jem are both bugged about their dad being a “Nigger lover”. The white girl who was raped is represented by Mr. Ewell.

Dill finally comes back to Maycomb and the characters find out that he was left to die, locked in a room by his step Dad. Dill wandered all over the country to get back to Maycomb. During the court date Atticus reveals to everyone that Tom didn’t rape the girl but he is convicted anyways. Later on we find out that Tom ended up dying because he tried to escape from prison.

In the end Jem and Scout are walking home one night from a school pageant and Mr. Ewell tries to kill both of them, he breaks Jem’s arm. After Mr. Ewell is killed, Boo Radley brings Jem and Scout to their father.  Once Jem and Scout get back to their dad and he is filled in on everything and he feels that Jem killed Mr. Ewell.
